Contract Offer 2011: Bad for our Union Family

As we wait to get more details of the 2011 “small table agreement,” we want to alert our members to key issues in the offer. Our Policy Board met on the phone with Business Agent Ric Casilli Monday night until 9:30 pm. At the Negotiating Committee BA Casilli voted against this offer. We want to stress to our members the importance of waiting to review the details of the contract. Key bad provisions:

  1. For future hires there is no defined benefit pension plan. No pension supplement, no post 65 medical plan, must pay 50% of pre-65 medical insurance, no retiree life insurance, no disability pension. Soon there will be no one to fight for those who still have a pension.

  1. Job security SERO (Special Early Retirement Option) is gutted. That means when there are layoffs, no longer will the high seniority members be able to retire and save the short service member from layoff. And the financial deterrent to GE farm out and outsourcing is gone.

  1. The hated management HealthChoice is the template for our new health insurance. The costs are modified a little, but the structure remains: a high deductible, members required to pay 20% of costs before a “co-insurance maximum” kicks in, and increased premiums in 2012, 2014, and in 2015 for smokers. Three options that pit the young and healthy against the older and sicker members. It will encourage people to gamble with health insurance or avoid the doctor.

  1. Dump the lump. The $5000 may seem good, but it replaces a wage increase (3% last contract) that applies to your base rate, pension, and wage related benefits.
